Wednesday 9th of March 2011 Time: Unknown (sometime before midday)
I followed the freaks as they headed west, and this morning they all stopped in front of a large complex. It looked like an old bus depot or something like that. Whoever was inside had moved all the buses and parked them along the edges of the fence, all the wheels from the buses had been removed as well. This created a defensive wall around the entire depot. Whoever was in charge of defending this place certainly knew what they were doing!
I was on top of a house and from here I could see there was a large building in the centre. And to the left of the centre was a big warehouse. The freaks were all agitated and were screaming and clawing at whatever was near them. It looked like they were frustrated and I kept asking myself ‘why are they so attracted to this area?’ something was drawing them to the complex inside. Whatever it was, I needed to get to it first...
Cody Matthews is a man all alone, in a world that's been ravaged by a virus. Everything is quiet, he has no one to talk to, no one to watch over him. He finds a blank diary and decides that he will no longer be alone, as long as he has you reading about his life...

Don’t lie to me...
Tuesday 8th of March 2011 Time: Unknown (a few hours later)
My god, there are so many of them! I had to hide because they were starting to outrun me. Why the hell are these guys so fast? Is it because they sense food is not far away? Either way, they were getting too close for comfort. Any closer and they would have caught me, so I did what I do best... hide.
While I’m stuck here waiting for these freaks to get past, I’ll copy some of this diary that I found in that house yesterday. I think that lady deserves to be heard, even if it’s only a few words within my own diary. I’ll write what I can, but most of the pages are stuck together.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (November 24th 2010)
My husband has been acting strange lately. He came home late again, I called his work to speak to him but when I called they said he left hours ago. When he got home I told him I called his work, but he just said he went to Jason’s house to finish off some work.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (November 30th 2010)
I’m almost certain that my husband is having an affair. I know he’s a police officer and they work late nights, but he used to call me when he was running late before. Now he won’t even look at me when he gets home.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (December 15th 2010)
I confronted my husband tonight. For the first time in 24 years we are sleeping in separate rooms. When I confronted him he just said “He can’t speak about his work” and “You don’t want to know”. What the hell is that suppose to mean? After 24 years of being together that’s all he can say to me? I’m going to pack tonight and leave with my daughter in the morning.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (December 16th 2010)
I found my husband lying in the hallway this morning, breathing really heavy and looking pale. I had no choice but to stay, I couldn’t leave him like that. When I went to check my daughter I found she was in the same state. It looks like they have both caught a nasty flu or something similar.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (December 18th 2010)
So now I’m feeling sick. It seems most of the neighbourhood is feeling it too. This morning trucks arrived with medical personnel to treat everyone. They deemed we were still ok so they promised to come back tomorrow to see us. My husband wants to talk to me now. He says he wants to tell me what’s been happening because he feels he doesn’t have much time left.
----------------------------------
Dear Diary, (December 19th 2010)
My husband is now dead, and I fear my daughter will soon be dead as well. The medical people all left this morning. All they have done is put plastic everywhere in our house. They promised to look at us today but I guess that’s not going to happen anymore. I don’t even have the strength to call for help.
Last night I heard people screaming. I hope everything is ok. I feel this will be my last diary entry. So before I pass away, this is what my husband told me. He had been working guarding a secret facility north of our town. He couldn’t tell me this before because he was being monitored. He said people were being brought in and were being experimented on. He doesn’t know what was going on, but he said this sickness going around is something to do with what was happening at that facility. Everyone that that got sick never got better, they were just ‘disposed’’. I feel bad for thinking he was up to something else. I knew he would never do anything to hurt me. I need to rest now, my daughter seems to be better as I can hear her running around again, although she is making quite a bit of noise. I better go open her door to make sure she’s ok.
----------------------------------
So that’s all I could gather from the diary, I’m glad I picked this up now. I got a bit more information on the virus and just as I thought, it was man-made. Typical, some idiot thinks he can play god by tampering with human lives and now look at the consequences. I do find it funny that I’m heading north towards the facility that was mentioned.
It seems a little quieter now. I think most of the freaks have gone past. Time for me to go! This will certainly be the first time I’ve actually stalked them instead of the other way around, but hey there’s a first time for everything right?

Transcripts of a radio call...
Tuesday 8th of March 2011 Time: Unknown (early morning)
“Hello? Hello? Can anyone hear me?”
*Static*
“This is Lt Lars of the human freedom fighters, identify yourself?”
“You can hear me? This is amazing! My name is Cody Matthews and I’m all alone. I don’t exactly know where I’ am but there are a lot of dead soldiers here, whatever happened here I just missed it”
“Mr Matthews, are any of the soldiers alive? Any of them?”
“I’m sorry Lt, but I’ve been here for last 30mins looking around, I checked each and every person but they are all dead. What happened here?”
“Those men were meant to hold off the undead for as long as they could while we evacuated this centre. They were only the first wave. You must get out of the area as fast as you can Mr Matthews”
“Please just call me Cody, what do you mean first wave? where are you camped?”
“We are camped north of....can’t.... dangerous.....get out of.... now!...around you!”
I’m only taking a short break to write down what just happened. I can’t explain everything just yet! I have to move fast. The freaks are close, my god I’ve never seen so many before, I have to go now!
But before I do, Happy 30th birthday Cody...

House of horrors...
Monday 7th of March 2011 Time: Unknown (approximately midday)
Great my watch is now out of battery, is anything else going to go wrong! I’m in great mood right now (note sarcasm). The reason I’m in a great mood? Well I just had to hack a child into pieces, that’s why! I know it’s not the first time I’ve taken a child freak out, but something about killing this one just broke my heart.
It happened in a small suburb I was walking through. Everything in this place was so run down just like everything else in this god forsaken world. I could just imagine this suburb as being one of those typical white picket fence sort of area. Mother’s walking their babies down the streets whilst the father is outside mowing the lawn, and the eldest son is washing the car. That was back then. Now it was a haven for the undead, or freak, whatever it is I usually call them. I’ve never really given it much thought as to why I call them freak? Undead just creeps me out I guess! Too many zombie movies...
So here I was walking through, trying to keep low key. I came across this house that looked perfect for grabbing some supplies. It had large front windows where I could see in, the front door was missing and it was two floors. Usually the duel floor houses had bedrooms at the top, and everything else down on the ground floor which meant everything useful to me would be downstairs.
I entered the front room with caution, machete already in my hand. You could easily tell this place had been sacked. Everything was just thrown on the floor. I knew straight away I wouldn’t find much, but I continued to look around just in case. After looking around on the bottom floor for a while the best I could find was a tin of corn... I HATE corn, yes I know, weird right! You never know how things might turn out so I took it anyway. I was about to leave when I noticed a strange crack in the wall, it was a little too perfect so I went over to investigate. The crack was just below a painting. I took the painting off the wall and felt around, I used my machete to dig into the wall and to my surprise a large square fell off. Behind it was a safe. It was obviously a gun safe because there was a police stamp above the safe, which meant a police officer lived here. It was pin coded and ran off its own battery, I could tell because a little green light was still blinking. I had little chance of getting into it. This was the part where I should have given up and walked out.
I thought to myself,” what the hell, the pin could be written down upstairs somewhere”. I went upstairs trying to make as little noise as possible. When I reached the top, I noticed it was a 3 bedroom house, 2 bedrooms on the left, and one on the right, with a bathroom just on the left side as well. I opened the door at the end, and as I opened the door the most horrific smell escaped and made my legs buckle. I fell to the floor and vomited. When I looked in, I saw two rotting bodies on the bed... or at least half a body each. Mother and Father no doubt. I covered my mouth and nose with a cloth and entered the room to begin my search. I opened the drawers first, nothing but clothes and jewellery but no watch or a sequence of numbers that looked like a pin. I found a few notepads, but after flicking through the pages I found nothing that resembled a pin. One thing I did find was someone else’s diary. It was the wife’s diary. Was it wrong for me to take it? I didn’t think so, and now it’s in my backpack.
I was about to leave the room when I noticed on the bed, the police officers badge. I don’t know why but I reached over and grabbed it nearly vomiting again as I did. There was a sequence of numbers at the bottom which was his serial number but way too long for a pin. I flipped the badge over and on the back was a 5 digit number. Strange how they were etched in don’t you think? I thought so too, so I took the badge to try the number out. I had my back to door at this stage, and I suddenly got that horrible feeling someone was watching me. The hairs on my neck stood up, and I slowly turned around. In the doorway was a child, around 5yrs of age on a small plastic tricycle.
It had something in its hands, part bone and part meat. I looked at the bodies on the bed again, and sure enough this child had been feeding on its parents. I didn’t want to kill it, but it was in the doorway and I couldn’t sneak around it. It knew I was there, and I looked fresh compared to what is had been feeding on. It dropped the current meal and screamed at me, I had no choice. I ran forward and kicked it in the face as hard as I could. The force was enough to snap its weakened neck. It slumped forward dead, or at least I thought so... Its mouth suddenly started making noise again, I kicked it again and it went tumbling down the stairs. It stood up, and started making its way up the stairs. It was something straight out of horror movie watching it crawl up the stairs... It was obviously no match for me but that didn’t stop it from trying. I took my machete out and swung hard hitting the thing in the shoulder. I kept swinging and chopping until there was just a puddle of gore and bits of a human child all over the ground.
I don’t know why but I felt really bad about this one. For crying out loud it was only a small child. I went downstairs and started sobbing uncontrollably for god knows how long. After my little crying episode I picked myself up and went over to the safe, I tried the 5 digit number and the safe clicked open. Inside was a stash of money, and a small black box. I took the box out and broke the flimsy little lock on it, inside was my prize. A standard issue glock, or at least I think it is. This is the type of gun that all cops around here use. I pressed a small button at the top and the cartridge fell out, still fully loaded. There was a stack of 6 clips inside the box and I took them all.
With my new weapon secured to my waist I left that house of horrors. Just writing this and thinking about that little boy is making me feel ill again...

No turning back...
Sunday 6th of March 2011 7PM
I came across the most interesting thing this afternoon. It was around 4 or 5pm, I can’t quite remember. I was looking for a place to stop for the night when I came across what looked like an old camp site by the road. I thought this spot was as good as any. It had decent coverage and there was field behind it so anything trying to sneak up on you could be easily spotted. There were a lot of scattered dead leaves on the field, which I thought was odd considering I couldn’t spot any trees close by. But that wasn’t the interesting part.
I started walking around close by to gather some wood. The nearest trees were across the road on the opposite field. When I got back to the camp site I started breaking the wood to make a fire in the pit that was already there. As I placed the wood in the pit I noticed something odd, the rocks around the pit were warm? I moved some of the coals around and found some of them to be warm as well.
That means... someone was here recently!
There’s hope yet! I’ll admit after my incident in the city I was close to calling it quits. But wait a moment, what I don’t get is that I’m only roughly 2 days behind him or her (judging by the warmth from the rocks), but yet I was in the city for around a week? And the survivor I spotted wasn’t walking either, they were driving so this must mean it’s someone else!
Hang on a moment...
*10 mins pass*
Well whoever was here is extremely cautious. You know those dead leaves? What a brilliant idea! The person placed them on the field so when something approached it would make a crunching sound, simple but yet so effective. It was only one freak by itself. Stupid thing was easily taken care of. He was kind enough to bring me boots that were just my size though.
Ok well I can’t afford to stop now. I can walk well into the night, but before I go there’s something I’ve been meaning to start doing again...

Footloose....
Sunday 6th of March 2011 3AM
So you’re probably wondering what I decided to do... Well let’s just say I still don’t have a gun. The only good news is I’m out of the city. But for that good news, I have 2 parts bad news. The first, I have never been this far north before so I have no idea where I’ am anymore, and the second? Well, let me explain that.
While I was in the vent, I had decided I would go for the gun. So I ventured further back into the vent, in hopes of luring the freaks away from the sports section. After stumbling around in the near dark for what seemed like hours, I found I was a little further down into the shop. This time I didn’t hesitate to make noise, I kicked the mesh as hard as I could, and it came crashing down with a loud bang. The growling and snarling of the freaks told me that they had definitely heard the noise.
I climbed back into the vent and made my way back to the sporting section. I jumped back down, but with caution. I grabbed my shotgun and started making my way towards the front door. I was walking down the stairs when something suddenly grabbed my leg, I fell over the last few steps and hit the ground. I was in pain but I still managed to get up quickly. I scanned around the room and I couldn’t see a thing! But there in corner of the staircase hiding in the dark was one of the freaks. This one was missing both its legs. It was kind of just lying there in a puddle of its own gore. I pulled out my machete and made quick work of it. I started running towards the door because I was certain the freaks had heard me crashing into the ground. I had nearly reached the door when I noticed there were 3 of them standing around near the door. “Great” I thought, this was all I needed. By now the other freaks had started coming down the stairs so I was out of options, I pulled the shotgun out and quickly loaded it. I shot the first freak fair in the face. The other 2 charged at me. I hit the closest one with the butt of the shotgun and it went down, the second quickly succumbed to a quick chop of the machete. I ran to the door and managed to get it unlocked, but I was too late! The freaks had reached me, and once again I was fighting for my life!
I struggled not to get bitten or scratched again, I survived the crawling creature but I didn’t want to test my luck on a bite from the freaks. The door was partially open and I just squeezed through, but one of them had my leg, I pulled hard hoping not to get scratched. I would rather deal with a broken leg, than a bite or scratch mark. My leg broke free at the cost of my boot, god dammit of all things to lose. It gets better, not only did I lose my shoe, but as started running I did a quick glance back, and I noticed one of the freaks holding something. Great! I lost my shotgun too.
As I walk down a dark empty highway I pray it gets a little better for me tomorrow...
So you’re probably wondering what I decided to do... Well let’s just say I still don’t have a gun. The only good news is I’m out of the city. But for that good news, I have 2 parts bad news.

Call a locksmith...
Saturday 5th of March 2011 10PM
This morning I left the warehouse, with most of my gear missing my aim was to backtrack a little to see what I could recover. I really wanted my machete back as it was my best form of defence. I tracked back to where I had the standoff with the crawling creature, there was dry blood everywhere! I was surprised that I had lived through all of that. After rummaging through the debris for a short time, I found what I was looking for. It was like finding a long lost friend, I felt like hugging it. Ok I admit that was a little strange, but what do you expect? I nearly died a week ago, and this thing saved my life!
I set out with caution, as this place was still crawling with freaks. But I couldn’t be too slow. I had a lot of ground to make up. Who knows how far ahead the survivor is, who knows if I’m even heading in the right direction anymore. I’m becoming quite adept at avoiding unnecessary attention. And I slipped through most of the city without incident.
I had come to the edge of the city but I couldn’t leave yet, there was something I really needed. Food! I wish I could go back to that farm house and grab some meat, but that was a 10 day walk in the wrong direction. I spotted a grocery store and thought there had to be something in there. I mean if there was going to be food anywhere around here - it would be in the grocery store right? You see, the cities were among the first to be abandoned during the early days of the outbreak, but funny enough they also became the most heavily infected areas... I guess the freaks just love the dark empty buildings around here.
So I figured, hastily abandoned place = things left behind right?
I got to the front window of the store and looked inside. The main door was chained shut from the outside. I looked in, and lo-and behold the aisles were still so full! But I could see why. The locks weren’t meant to keep people out... it was meant to keep them in. A staff member must have caught the virus and some bright person (no doubt someone in Management) thought it was a good idea to chain everyone up to stop it from spreading.
My plan was simple, they were hungry and I was going to use that against them. I was going to unlock the front door, announce I was there and lead them to an alleyway next to the store. Then I would use the fire escape ladder to climb up onto the roof, this would keep them occupied for days as they try to figure out how to get up. But unknown to them, I will sneak into the air-conditioning vent and slip down into the store and lock the front door back up.
The plan went off without a hitch. The chain on the front was fairly rusted and broke off easily enough. I ran into the store and started screaming like a madman and sure enough the freaks came running out. I ran into the alleyway and quickly climbed up the fire escape ladder, making sure to bring it back up once I reached the first level. I stood there for a minute making sure I had their undivided attention. This was almost too easy, I thought to myself as I climbed into the vent. A short crawl through the vents brought me to the lower part of the store, I carefully removed the mesh, making sure not to make too much noise, and jumped down into the store. I made my way to the front and closed the doors, locking them from the inside. Time to go shopping!
Everything was going great, I had gathered plenty of food and first aid supplies, but and best of all this place has a sporting section. That meant guns! And plenty of them! I had no idea which gun matched which ammo so I tried to find one that looked similar to the one I had found at the farm. There it was, a single barrel shotgun that looked identical. I smiled to myself as I broke the glass. Then it happened...
As the glass shattered an ear piercing alarm went off. What the hell? I thought to myself, then I realised it must be running off a remote battery, why didn’t I think of that!
I managed to escape into the vent before the freaks broke the door down. They seem to be a lot more aggressive when a potential meal is lurking around. I’m in the vent trying to decide whether I try for the shotgun, or do I move on without it...

New beginnings...
Friday 4th of March 2011 8AM
I’m confident in saying that I no longer feel infected. I knew that I was, but for some reason I didn’t turn. I feel different. I no longer feel the same, I can’t quite explain it but it’s just... different.
I think I’m fit enough to leave this building and continue my journey. I found some tinned food in the cupboard to keep me for another day or two. It certainly isn’t a 5 star meal but it will keep me alive. I just need to get back on track and search for the survivor. I need to let him or her know there are others who are not infected.
This time when I set out, I do it properly. Not like before where I was blundering around like a child. I need to be more careful around the freaks, they can be tricked but they can’t be fooled (if that makes sense). And who’s to say the creature that nearly killed me is the only one of its kind.
Note to self: Need a new pen, this one is about done. Wouldn’t it be great if I could just blog this on the internet via my old laptop...

Born again...
Thursday 3rd of March 2011 5AM
Why haven’t I turned yet? What’s going on here?
I just checked in the mirror and I noticed that the spots on my face are no longer black. They are more a brown/dark brown. Weird don’t you think? I just noticed something else - I can move my four broken fingers! This is really strange. I feel really tired but the burning feeling is all gone, and the gash on my back has already started to scab. I also can’t believe I’ve been asleep for two days without incident, I mean why haven’t the freaks attacked me yet?
I felt really hungry when I woke up, so I’m sitting here eating some dried meat I found in my bag... It tastes ok so I’m guessing it’s not off. I might try walking around for a bit, I haven’t even checked out this warehouse to see if it was secure!

The truth...
Tuesday 1st of March 2011 9AM
My body feels like its on fire, I can’t stand up because it hurts too much. My thoughts feel all muddled up. I feel this may be my last entry before I turn, so there are a few things I need to get off my chest.
I’m sorry to my neighbour (not the one with the annoying brat). I was the one that took a dump on your front door last Halloween. My neighbours name was Andrew deSouci, birthday unknown. He lived alone.
To my friends band ‘The Stone Agers’, sorry guys you really did suck.
To the random guy who asked for change every day, get a job you hippy!
Ok on to the serious stuff...
Mom and Dad, I’m sorry I haven’t spoken to you in over 2 years. What happened was not your fault and I don’t blame you for that. My parents’ names are Caroline Matthews and Steven Matthews. Caroline was born August 25th 1955, and Steven was born January 28th 1961.
My brother and sister, how annoying you are but I still love you both. Their names are Kym Matthews and James Matthews. Kym was born June 1st 1991, and James was born October 6th 1994.
And to my beautiful lost love Natalie, born July 6th 1982 – your last name I keep forever with me. I lied to everyone in the diary that I had no-one to care for. You were lost to me in the early days, which is why I was hiding on that rooftop. I couldn’t come to terms that you were taken away from me. I die knowing full well I was one of the few lucky people in the world who had found his true love...

Hush...
Monday 28th of February 2011 10:30AM
I feel like absolute crap, I look like I’ve been beat up by an angry mob. My face is all swollen, my four broken fingers hurt, my back hurts, my ribs hurt... And on top of that I’ve run out of first aid supplies, so no more pain killers for me!
After my incident last night, I managed to get into this warehouse nearby without running into the freaks. I closed the door behind me and pushed a desk against it, not that it will hold them but I feel safer knowing it’s going to make a hell of a noise should someone try to come in. I used what first aid supplies I had to ‘fix’ myself as best I could. Pushing four broken fingers back into place was the worst part, I nearly blacked out from the pain.
I can feel the virus going through my body. I found a small mirror here and manage to get a look at myself, I can see little black spots appearing on my face, my eyes are becoming a milky white, and I’ve got patches of brown appearing on my arms and legs. I’m not sure how long it takes before I lose my mind, but so far I feel very relaxed considering the situation. I think I’ll make myself as comfortable as I can right here. I’ve done enough running over the past weeks, and I have little hope of finding that survivor now anyway.
I’m feeling very sleepy of all a sudden, so I think that’s enough writing for now.

And the hero will drown...
Sunday 27th of February 2011 11PM
I’ve titled this entry from one of my favourite songs back when the world was normal, and before you jump ahead, no, I don’t think of myself as a hero... but what happened in the last couple of hours will definitely explain the drowning part for you.
I didn’t think I had a chance against that creature. Once I closed my diary and placed it on the floor, I took my pack off. In my left hand I had my machete, in my right, the shotgun. I stood there in front of the door waiting for him to break it open, at this point in time I had given up. I knew this was the end for me, but I was tired of running. It was a strange moment in time, when everything seemed to slow down, the rain coming through the broken window, my breathing, everything was in slow motion. The splintering wood that hit my leg soon snapped me out of it.
This was it, the door finally gave way, and there in the archway was the creature. The first part I saw were those piercing glowing orbs that it had for eyes. It took a couple of steps forward and stood there. I gripped my weapons with a deathlike grip and screamed at it ‘Come on and get this over with!’ the creature snarled and bared it teeth, then charged towards me. I raised my shotgun and fired, at this close range there was no chance in missing and the slug hit the creature in the ribs – now all this happened within a split second because in reality the creature was probably only 5 steps away from me. The slug didn’t seem to deter it at all, and it hit me with such force that it drove me into the wall behind. I swung my machete (which was still in my left hand), and it connected with its shoulder, the creature howled in pain. It stood up, and for the first time I actually saw just how big this thing was.
It was easily a full head bigger than me. It grabbed my machete from its shoulder, and threw across the room. I did the last thing it expected, and charged at him! I tackled it to the ground, and began punching it as hard as I could. It felt like I was punching a brick wall, but I continued to pound it. It howled when a few of my stray punches connected with its face, and it threw me off. I landed hard on the ground face down. The creature came over and stood on my back, and with a swing of its arm clawed my back. Pain shot up through my body and I screamed for the first time in my life.
The creature howled but this time it was a victory howl, and somewhere nearby I heard the freaks howl in return. This creature was calling them. I was dazed and my vision narrowed, but right in front of me was my machete. I reached out for it with my left hand but the creature noticed and stomped on my hand, I heard a snapping noise and knew straight away that I had broken something. My fingers were now at a weird angle. Again I screamed in pain...
I willed myself to move and not give up, don’t die like this! I wriggled sideways, which was just enough to throw the creature off balance – I reached out for my machete and turned over. The creature jumped at me, and in one slow motion swing, my machete hit the creature on the neck, severing its head from its body. Its limp body landed right next to me, its head rolled off to the side – the eyes were no longer glowing.
So that’s it, it’s all over, I’ve been scratched which means I’m infected. My body hurts like hell, I can see my veins throbbing which is weird (signs of the virus I guess). I’m proud of myself though, of what I’m accomplished, of how much I’ve grown. I went down fighting, not hiding on rooftop or running.
I’ll continue to write as much as I can before I turn. But for now I need to attend my wounds, and get to safety before the freaks turn up.

The End?
Sunday 27th of February 2011 9:30PM
I knew it was foolish to come here. I should have listened to my instincts. I’m stuck in a dead end street with that crawling creature just outside door, and it’s only a matter of seconds before he breaks the door down. This could be my last entry so before I die I want you to know I’m grateful for you, I’m grateful for finding you, I’m grateful that you accompanied me, and most of all – I’m grateful for you giving the strength for what I’m about to do.
Time to open the door and say hello to my little friend...

Lost and found...
Sunday 27th of February 2011 10:45AM
I got my machete back! I found it right where I thought it would be, in the ally way. But man am I tired. After all that running early this morning, and the thought of that creature lurking around somewhere, I must have gotten around 10mins of actual sleep. And can you believe it’s still raining? Someone up there still loves me.
You’ll have to excuse me if my writing gets all over place, you see I’m not quite myself right now. So where am I hiding at the moment? In some office block, near the central business district, that horrid creature I came across last night must be tracking me. I can hear it wailing every now and then, and I swear its getting closer to me, which is why I must keep moving.
Sooner or later I’m going to have to deal with it...

Hell on earth...
Sunday 27th of February 2011 2:30AM
These past few hours have been hell for me, I’m running on pure adrenaline right now. Anything that moves or makes a sound and I’m ready to shoot at it, I thought by writing in here it might help calm my nerves.
A few hours ago I was in an apartment block around three floors up. I heard something roaming around, and then I heard glass breaking. That crawling creature found me! I have no idea what the hell it is, but it managed to find me in that apartment block. I had no time to do anything except run. Since I’m not totally stupid I had kept everything in my pack just in case of a situation like this. Unfortunately this creature had the lower staircase covered, so I had to run up. This was one of those older type apartment blocks so there was one central staircase which spiralled around the middle, and between the staircase was the lift (non-operational of course). I ran up and up, I lost count of how many floors there actually were. This creature right on my tail, I could hear it thumping up the stairs. I didn’t even dare look back to see how close it was. When I reached the top floor I smashed through the fire escape door shoulder first. Once on the roof I had no-where to go. I thought there might have been a ladder heading down but I was wrong. And then the creature reached the roof.
I stood there in the rain looking at it, knowing full well this creature was a lot stronger than your average freak. I was a lot closer to it this time around, and I noticed that apart from its spine jutting out, there was some sort of brown liquid oozing from holes in its back. Its hands were missing most of its skin, and in some places you could actually see the bones. It also had teeth protruding through the side of its cheeks where patches of meat were missing. I actually felt physically ill looking at it. It sniffed the air towards me, why did it keep doing that? Then it hit me... it was blind. The red glow was coming from empty eye sockets. I looked behind me to the next apartment block, the jump I could probably make but I would need a run-off. Screw this I thought, there is no way I can take this thing on right now.
I ran from where I was and jumped as far as I could. I hit the edge of the building hard but managed to hold on and pull myself over. Without missing a beat, I got up and ran. I didn’t look back to see where the creature was, or whether it was actually still following me.
I’m resting on the ground floor this time... not making the same mistake twice. During my jump I must have dropped my machete because it’s no longer strapped to my pack. I’m glad the shotgun is still there, although I do feel a little naked without my machete. My plan is to rest up until first light, then head into the ally way where I jumped over to look for my machete. And then I press on...

Things that go bump in the night...
Saturday 26th of February 2011 11PM
Something is in here with me, I can hear it. It sounds like a cat scratching a wall, mixed with heavy breathing and groaning... I’m making this entry to calm my nerves, because I’m freaking out right now. Why am I freaking out? Well I’m in a dark, dank building with no lights, and tiny torch, and something lurking around close by. I’m just glad it didn’t catch me while I was sleeping.
Talking to you seems to do something for me. It gives me clarity and stops me from going completely nuts. I guess I should go take a look at what’s making that noise? Wait one second... Jesus Christ help me, that crawling creature is back... I need to go now!

Run rabbit run...
Saturday 26th of February 2011 1:10PM
I’m holed up in some old apartment block, I know, not the best place to be in. I had no other choice as the freaks started to swamp me. Since I got into the city it’s been run, shoot, reload, repeat. The fact that it’s still raining is probably the only reason I haven’t been swamped. Although like I said, it’s been close.
I did my final checklist in the early hours of the morning. I must have looked like an idiot jumping up and down making sure nothing in my pack was making noise. I came into the city from the south, as I got closer I went from car to car hiding where I could. My first trouble came when I ran into the first group of freaks. I had no choice but to get rid of them, I was sick of trying to find another way into the city. There were around ten of them, which to me was a little worrying considering I have never taken on ten in a direct fight. I had two options left, either run straight and true, or dispatch all of them. Both options presented considerable risk. If I ran straight, they would definitely notice and come running, which would potentially attract even more. The second option was probably the best, although I ran the risk of getting bitten or scratched which would end my trip. If you have half a brain you’ve probably realised by now that I survived because I’m writing this right?
I got as close as I could to the freaks without them noticing me. The plan was simple - charge in guns blazing and kill them all. As I was running I aimed my shotgun at the nearest freak and fired, my shot went wild and missed (note to self: running and shooting like they do in the movies does not work, unless you have machine gun). The only thing this was successful in doing was announcing I was there. I took my machete out and swung as hard as I could. I hit the first freak in the middle of the head which killed him instantly. I pulled my machete out of his head and quickly climbed onto the nearest car. This was where I would make my stand. The rest of the freaks all reached me at once, all nine of them. Like a mad man I began swinging my machete, I hacked off the arms of the few nearest freaks, their limbs still twitching as they lay on the ground. Two of them were smart enough to climb onto the bonnet of the car and try from that angle, the first one I managed to kick back off. The second one had my machete embedded deep into his neck, he stood for a brief moment with his head slumped at an unnatural angle before falling off the car, this left around four to worry about.
The remaining freaks were a lot easier to deal with as I could keep an eye on all of them. Shortly after they joined the rest in a gruesome puddle of blood and severed limbs. I thought my ordeal was over, so I climbed down off the car and reloaded my shotgun, and headed towards the city.
As I got into the city I realised that the ten freaks I ran into was just a warm-up. They were absolutely everywhere! It wasn’t long before I was noticed, and so I did the only thing I could... run. And that’s how I ended up in this apartment block. It was the only place to run where they couldn’t see me enter the building. Even though it’s only slightly past midday I think I’ll stay here for the night.

Kiss me...
Friday 25th of February 2011 6PM
It’s been raining non-stop since around midnight last night, which for me is good news. The more noise the rain makes, the less chance those freaks will hear me. I’ve been preparing myself for tomorrow, as I make my final dash into the city. I cannot afford to waste anymore time trying to find another way in.
My checklist for tomorrow is:
a) Extra shells in pockets
b) Machete sharpened
c) Anything in my pack that makes noise is taped and secured
I’ve always been a fan of the old KISS principle (keep it simple stupid). No need to over complicate things right? Anyway I’ve got to go. I’ve just started a fire to cook some of this meat I got from the old farm house. Once in the city I highly doubt I can start a fire without getting swamped by those freaks.
Wish me luck...

Cat and mouse...
Thursday 24th of February 2011 8PM
My attempts to sneak into the city are just not working, there are freaks everywhere! I have already exhausted a quarter of my ammo skimming the outskirts of the city trying to find a way through. Yesterday was when I realised I wasn’t alone, and so like the fool I was, I charged in.
Funny enough I had little trouble sitting in the open yesterday with a fire going, I had one freak who interrupted my sleep, and he was easily dispatched. I got up fairly early this morning, as I didn’t want to leave a huge gap between me and the survivor. I mean he or she was in a car, and here I was running and walking. You’re probably thinking why haven’t I just jumped into a car too?
In the early days of the outbreak I was in a car with some random people, trying to escape a horde of freaks. Everyone in the car was screaming and panicking, including the driver. The freaks were charging after us and eventually we drove down a dead end road where we were swamped. Everyone in the car completely lost it, and started trying to jump out and run but each time someone tried getting out they would just get eaten alive. I witnessed this in the most horrific way - blood was spraying everywhere, people screaming like feral animals, limbs falling into the car.
I barely escaped, I managed to crawl into the boot of the car and close the small hole between the seats before any of those freaks noticed. During the time I was in the boot, the vehicle was left running, so there was this horrid sound of the engine of the car mixed with people dying. I stayed there for hours waiting until all the screaming and moaning had passed. To be honest I have no idea why I came out of that alive, I should have died there and then... But I didn’t, and now I have this fear of cars. Being inside one doesn’t scare me. It’s just the sound of one while it’s running. I know that sounds strange to you, but you put yourself in that situation, and come find me and let me know how it feels.
That’s enough digging into my memory for one day... I need to keep a clear head for what’s to come.

Get to the chopper...
Wednesday 23rd of February 3:45PM
Well I’m here at the outskirts of city, sitting by a campfire cleaning my gun. My journey towards the city is getting harder and harder. Tuesday was pretty much smooth sailing, however from Tuesday night? That’s a different story.
So there I was Tuesday night sleeping in a hotel in a small suburb outside the city, no signs of life yet found I would just like to note. Not exactly sure what time it was, but it was the sound that woke me up. A horrible wail, almost like a wolf howling at the full moon, I ran to the window with my shotgun in hand and there across the road was a pack of those things shambling down the road together. But that’s not what caught my attention. There lingering at the back of the pack was a creature hunched over, crawling along the ground sniffing the air like a dog. You could clearly see it was once human. Its spinal cord was jutting out, and its face still almost resembled a human, almost... It had red glowing eyes which seemed a little too bright, like radiation or something like that. It stopped directly across from my hotel and sniffed the air towards me, I stood peaking out through the curtains, I didn’t even realise I had stopped breathing.
This new creature sniffed the air a few more times in my direction. Then it stopped and opened its eyes wide, and let out that horrible wail. The pack of freaks stopped walking forward, and they all turned towards my hotel. Great I thought - how the hell am I going to get out of this one?
There were way too many of them for me to handle with my machete and single barrel shotgun. Another problem was I had nowhere to run, you see I was in one of those single level hotels, or I think they refer to them as motels? Who knows and frankly at the time I didn’t really care. I was out of options, I had become careless and relaxed and my gear was spread out through the room, there was no way I was leaving this stuff. So I quickly turned my bed over against the door and jammed the wardrobe against the window and braced myself. Here they come. I heard them running up the railing and along the balcony. As they reached my door I raised my shotgun at the ready.
Then I heard a loud bang from a few rooms down. Glass sprayed out onto main road, and then I saw it.
A survivor...
I was so shocked I stood there motionless. I watched this person leap from the window, land on the grass and roll like some sort of commando. The creatures were on to the survivor so fast. As this person was running they took something out of their pocket and pressed what looked like a remote control. A dark van up ahead roared to life. This person was definitely well prepared. With one quick motion the person jumped into the van and sped off in the direction of the city. The freaks charged off after them.
Now I’m camped out on the main road with a fire going hoping that I’m more visible so any other survivors will see me. I’ve set out trying to track this other survivor down but I’ve got no previous skills in tracking anything apart tracking when my next free coffee was due. One more thing to note before I end this entry, I have no idea where that crawling creature went. I certainly didn’t see it run after the van like the rest of the freaks. Tonight I sleep with my gun in hand.
